The Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty has highlighted that smokers are at increased risk from COVID-19 and that now would be a good time to quit.

This is because many smokers already have poor respiratory health and smoking-related diseases caused by years of smoking. Smoking harms the immune system, making it harder to fight off infections, like coronavirus.

Smokers are therefore at greater risk of:

  • getting acute respiratory infections
  • the infection lasting longer
  • the infection being more serious than it would be for someone who does not smoke

Therefore now is a very important time for smokers to quit and reduce their harm from tobacco.

Quitting smoking rapidly reduces your risk of a range of health problems related to smoking, such as heart disease and stroke which is critical for smokers on an individual level and our health system as it is going to come under strain at this time.

If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to quit, this is it!!!

Smokers are reminded not to share cigarettes or roll-ups to avoid increasing the risk of transmission of the virus.

You’re 3 times more likely to quit with expert support and use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy or Champix.

Smokers take this opportunity to make your next quit attempt – The Sheffield Stop Smoking Service is here for you.

Consider switching to vaping

There has been some suggestion in the media that e-cigarette use could increase risks from COVID-19. There is no clear evidence for this suggestion, and while we know smoking is a definite risk factor, we would continue to encourage smokers to think about switching to e-cigarettes to reduce their risk of respiratory infections.
